Pasay City, 12 March 2026 – The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has adopted a four-day work week for personnel assigned at its Administration Building as part of government-wide belt-tightening measures following the call of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for agencies to reduce operational costs amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In a memorandum dated March 9, 2026, MIAA General Manager Eric Ines directed all organic personnel—including those engaged under Contract of Service (COS) and Job Order arrangements—to observe a four-day onsite work schedule effective immediately.

Under the new arrangement, employees will report for onsite duty from Monday to Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., while Friday to Sunday will be observed as rest days. The measure is expected to help reduce electricity consumption and other operational expenses while maintaining workplace productivity.

However, MIAA offices performing critical operational tasks will continue to operate on shifting schedules. These include the Airport Police Department, Operations and Compliance Group, Engineering Services, and Medical Services.

These units play a key role in MIAA’s oversight of the New NAIA Infra Corp (NNIC), the private operator of Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Strengthening Energy Conservation

In support of the revised work arrangement, MIAA will also revisit its existing energy conservation initiatives and explore additional strategies to further reduce electricity and fuel consumption.

Under MIAA Memorandum Circular No. 14-C, series of 2022, the Authority has already implemented several energy-saving measures. These include the use of energy-efficient lighting such as LED bulbs, optimization of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems through inverter-type air-conditioning units, regular maintenance of air filters, and the use of programmable thermostats. The standard thermostat setting in offices is maintained at 24°C.

MIAA has also encouraged offices to maximize the use of natural lighting by arranging workspaces near glass windows and panels. This allows non-essential lights to be switched off during daytime operations without affecting workplace visibility.

Other ongoing initiatives include unplugging office equipment after office hours and prioritizing the procurement of energy-efficient office appliances, particularly those bearing the Energy Star label. As part of its cost-saving efforts, MIAA has also reduced fuel allocation for its service vehicles by 10 percent.

Environmental Commitment

These measures form part of MIAA’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability. In 2021, the MIAA Environmental Management System Committee obtained ISO 14001:2015 certification, an internationally recognized standard that provides a framework for improving environmental management systems and environmental performance.

As part of this commitment, MIAA is also exploring the integration of renewable energy sources into its infrastructure development plans. Recently, solar panels were installed in one of its buildings near the Our Lady of the Airways Parish.

“Henceforth, we shall pursue this direction. The long-term benefits of using solar panels in alleviating climate change far outweigh the significant investment that will be required initially,” Ines said.

“Climate change is rapidly accelerating. The global call to reduce its effects can no longer be ignored,” he added.

Additional Efficiency Measures

Apart from energy conservation initiatives, MIAA is also implementing additional measures to promote operational efficiency and reduce costs. These include conducting virtual meetings whenever possible, encouraging employees to use the stairs as a form of cardio exercise, and limiting official travel within and outside the country to engagements that are strictly necessary to fulfill responsibilities under local or foreign accords.
